Forthcoming Collection on Mediterranean Climate, led by PLOS Climate

As anthropogenic climate change progresses, the Mediterranean Basin and other Mediterranean climate regions of the world are experiencing intensified and interacting risks and hazards, with severe consequences for human and natural systems. In this context, there is an urgent need for a strong, interdisciplinary evidence base on the processes and impacts of past, present and future climate variability and change in these regions.
A new Collection, led by PLOS Climate but involving other PLOS journals, will bring together original research articles (including systematic reviews and meta-analyses), narrative reviews, essays and opinion pieces addressing key aspects of Mediterranean climate variability. Reflecting the highly interdisciplinary scope of PLOS Climate and our sister journals, the Collection will feature contributions with perspectives from across a range of scientific fields and methodological approaches.
We aim for the Collection to cover topics including:
- Atmospheric and ocean dynamics
- Modelling and methods
- Extreme weather and climate events, and compound hazards
- Hydrology and biogeochemistry
- Urban climate
- Societal, economic and ecological vulnerabilities, resilience and impacts
- Mitigation and adaptation
- Mediterranean palaeoclimate
- Capacity-building and knowledge exchange
We are working with the organisers of the MedCLIVAR2026 conference (taking place in Limassol, Cyprus, 21 to 25 September 2026) to solicit contributions to this Collection. In keeping with the approach of the conference, the Collection will focus primarily on the Mediterranean Basin region but we will also invite contributions from other Mediterranean climate regions of the world.
All submissions will be due by 30 November 2026 and will be subject to our standard editorial policies and workflow. We aim to publish the Collection in the first half of 2027. More details will be made available to invited contributors.
