Call for Submissions: A PLOS Water Collection on ‘Integrative Approaches to Urban Flooding’

PLOS Water is pleased to announce a special collection of research papers on Integrative Approaches to Urban Flooding: Modeling, Monitoring, and Mitigation Strategies. This collection builds on the success of the session with the same theme at the AGU 2024 Conference, which highlighted the urgent need for innovative and interdisciplinary solutions to urban flooding challenges. The Guest Editors for this collection are Dr. Franco Montalto and Dr. Ahmad Haseeb Payab (Drexel University), alongside Dr. William Solecki (CUNY Hunter College) who also chaired the AGU 2024 session.
Urban flooding is a growing concern in the face of rapid urbanization, climate change, and aging infrastructure. This special collection seeks to bring together cutting-edge research and practical insights into the complexities of urban flooding, aiming to foster collaboration across disciplines and sectors. We welcome submissions from researchers, practitioners, and policymakers addressing a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Modeling Urban Flood Dynamics: Advances in hydrological and hydraulic modeling techniques, integration of multi-dimensional models, and the use of data-driven approaches for flood forecasting and risk assessment.
- Innovative Monitoring Technologies: Development and application of sensors, remote sensing tools, IoT devices, and other technologies to enhance real-time monitoring and data integration.
- Urban Flood Risk Assessment and Management: Analysis of vulnerabilities, implementation of nature-based solutions, and evaluation of governance strategies for building resilience.
- Usage of AI in Flood Modeling: Application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of flood modeling and decision-making processes.
- Multi-disciplinary Approaches and Case Studies: Collaborative research, cross-sectoral partnerships, and lessons learned from successful urban flood management initiatives.
We invite researchers to submit their manuscripts by 30 August 2025. Submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process in accordance with PLOS Water’s guidelines. Accepted papers will be published on a rolling basis to ensure timely dissemination of findings.
This special collection offers a unique platform to showcase innovative research and actionable solutions that can inform policy and practice for urban flood resilience. By contributing to this collection, you will be part of a global effort to address one of the most pressing environmental and societal challenges of our time.
For questions about the collection or to express an interest in submitting an article, please contact either the Guest Editors; Dr. Franco Montalto, Dr. Ahmad Haseeb Payab or Dr. William Solecki, or alternatively the PLOS Water Executive Editor, Guillaume Wright.
